Emotional Purity.

I visited my old church today. The pastor talked about pursuing someone with the intentions of a godly covenant and marriage. One of the main points he brought up was emotional purity.

Very often in mainstream Christian culture and in the church, there is a huge emphasis on physical purity.

But when he talked about emotional purity, it started to make sense. Emotions are so powerful and like a small rudder of a ship, it could steer our entire direction and the actions we choose to make.

Physical purity must start from the core of our hearts. We don’t just choose to draw a line and say, “Here is where we don’t cross… we could kiss, hold hands, etc. but we can’t do a, b, and c.”

But of course, our faith in Christianity is more than mere rules and laws to follow. The change is from within our hearts.

As the pastor was preaching, I earnestly asked in my mind, “How do we keep emotional purity?”

The pastor said we can keep emotional purity by doing the following:

  • Put your relationship with Christ first in everything
  • Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.(Proverbs 4:23)

I was shook lol. I knew this in the back of my mind, but as a Christian I must admit my mistakes. Earlier this year, when it came to “crushes” I slipped when it came to guarding my heart. I love God with all my heart, but when I started to think about some of my crushes, they started to really overtake my thoughts. The worse part was they weren’t Christian and when they got closer to me, I had some strong emotions particularly for some guys who didn’t even love and worship Jesus. That is dangerous.

Knowing this and being thoroughly reminded, I will be putting Christ first before everything.

“Search me, O God, and know my heart!
Try me and know my thoughts!
And see if there be any grievous way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting!”

Psalm 139:24-24

When it comes to my thoughts, my decisions, where I choose to hang out, I want to do what pleases and honors God. My heart and everything belongs to Him. He will be first. I know and trust that I will meet the right Christ loving man someday.
